In 1916, Ernest Holmes, from Chattanooga, Tennessee, used a 1913 Cadillac chassis to construct the first tow truck ever made. This was done in order to help his former business school professor John Wiley after his Ford Model T crashed into a creek bed. With the assistance of six men over eight hours, Holmes was able to rescue the car.
In 1917, Holmes created a crane and pulley system which he attached to a vintage Cadillac to pull broken or damaged vehicles back to the repair shop. He added two outriggers for extra support. His business later shifted to producing and selling Holmes Wrecker tow vehicles as a source of income.
Ernest Holmes Sr. was an innovator in the towing industry. Before his death in 1945, he had created a number of patents for tow trucks and other automotive tools, including lifts, creepers and jacks. This information comes from a Wikipedia article.
